JAZZ - ROCK - IMPROVISATION COURSES
Honors Jazz Ensemble 1 is a select group that features the performance of traditional and contemporary big band music. This group performs as part of department concerts as well as often for school and community events. This group rehearses on Monday evenings. The Jazz Ensemble uses a specific instrumentation of 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, and bari), piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Membership is determined by auditions held during audition week in February. Prerequisite: Wind and Percussion players must be members of either the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz/Rock Workshop, Jazz Ensemble 2 or Advanced Jazz Improv in order to be eligible for Honors Jazz Ensemble. Honors Jazz Ensemble 1 meets Monday Evening 6:00 - 8:30 pm and on Friday morning from 7-7:45am.
Jazz Ensemble 2 is open to all instrumentalists who wish to learn about and perform various styles of jazz, latin, fusion and rock music. The Jazz Lab Band serves to introduce students to the vocabulary of these various jazz styles as well as explore jazz improvisation.
Open to students in grades 9-12.
Jazz/Rock Workshop is open to all instrumentalists (We welcome flute, oboe, horn, bassoon, cello, and more!) who wish to learn about the various aspects of jazz music. This course will explore the essential concepts of jazz and is especially valuable for anyone who wants to be part of the Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Workshop curriculum is aimed at familiarizing students with the various styles and concepts encompassed within the jazz genre. Learning about jazz improvisation, jazz theory and jazz history will be the focal point of the Jazz Workshop. The Jazz Workshop will include both classroom and performance-based learning. Students may perform at concerts or within the community. Open to students in grades 9-12.
Advanced Jazz Improvisation is for students seeking advanced study of jazz improvisation and builds on concepts presented in Jazz Workshop. The Advanced Jazz Improvisation curriculum is aimed towards understanding the harmonic language used by jazz musicians. Students will gain a strong understanding of jazz theory as well as develop a jazz vocabulary. In addition to learning a base of standard jazz tunes, students will learn to compose their own music in the jazz idiom. Advanced Jazz Improvisation is a hands-on class with an emphasis on performance-based learning. Students may perform at concerts or within the community. Requirement: Jazz Workshop or permission from the Music Department.
Open to students in grades 10 -12.
Tiger Bebop is the vocal jazz component of the NNHS choral ensembles. Tiger Bebop is comprised of a balanced group of young
men and women from all levels and ages who have a passion for singing music from the Great American Songbook. Music from
many exciting, truly unique jazz vocal groups such as Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices are learned and performed with
a student instrumental ensemble to create an authentic high school musical powerhouse. Students are encouraged to explore
scat singing and solo opportunities. Each year, Tiger Bebop is part of the prestigious Berklee College of Music High School Jazz
Competition where they have listened to some of the greatest jazz choral ensembles in the USA. Master classes are held each year
with Jazz Artists such as Rebecca Parris to work on the craft of improvisation and style. If you enjoy singing, are interested in jazz
